For anyone who is interested, this is where I'll be posting weekly sketchbook prompts and ideas to spur your creativity and continue your art practice. (You'll also find them in the 'Assignments' tab on MS Teams.)
I'll post two prompts each week, one a bit open-ended to inspire your creativity and another to work at more technical art skills. Feel free to choose, or try both! Consider your use of space as you draw - how will you position and arrange things on the page in a visually-interesting way? Happy drawing!

WEEK 9... June 8 - June 12, 2020
Creativity/Imagination/Any Medium
Your idea of “HOPE”
Together, we have been staying apart to keep everyone safe. Considering these unusual and unprecedented times, express a message of HOPE. How will you visually communicate your idea… through painting, drawing, photography, poster, sculpture, collage, visual journal entry, comic book, a combination of words and images, or music and images, a graphic novel, a video, a handmade card for a loved one, a message of hope painted on your window, or drawn in chalk on your driveway…? Express yourself through art as you explore the theme of HOPE. |
WEEK 8... June 1 - June 5, 2020
Creativity/Imagination
Art History Re-enactment Photo
Do some research to find a famous/historical artwork that you’d like to re-create. Gather objects from around your home that you can use or wear to re-enact the original artwork, then snap a selfie or pose and get someone else to take the photo! Here are a couple of examples for inspiration… (Click on titles below for more info about the art!) a) Title: The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck (1434) b) Title: Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer (1665) |

One-Point Perspective Drawing
Grade 6 students had this covered bridge project well-underway in March, so here’s a chance to try it again! The Powerpoint will walk you through the steps we followed to a drawing using one-point perspective, starting with a horizon line and a vanishing point. You could even try this as a digital drawing. 3D Work
Origami Crane
Definition of Origami: the Japanese art or process of folding squares of paper into representational shapes. The word stems from ‘ori’ (to fold) and ‘kami’ (paper). One popular example of origami is the paper crane, which is used to symbolize peace and hope. |

Capturing Shadows
Look for objects in your home that create fun or interesting shadows. Use a light source to emphasize those shadows, then draw or trace the shadows on paper! You could try this outside too, with shadows from natural objects, or using sidewalk chalk. 3D Work
Foil Sculpture
Use aluminum foil (preferably after cooking so you can minimize waste) and create a sculpture out of foil. |
Blind Contour Drawing
This is an exercise that trains the eye and the hand to work as a team, and helps an artist to see the details of the subject. Using one single line, and without looking at your drawing/paper at all, create a continuous line blind contour drawing. |
WEEK 6... May 19 - May 22, 2020
Creativity/Imagination
Create Scratchboard Art
DIY Colorful Scratchboard Directions: First, fill paper with solid colour, using markers or crayons as a base layer. Next, cover your colour completely with a layer of black crayon. Then, scratch away top layer of black crayon with a bent paperclip or other scratch tool to create a design. |
Technical Skills
Observational Drawing Practice
Think of something ordinary that you see every day, but rarely take time to stop and carefully observe. Study this object – notice the lines, shapes, angles, spaces, textures… Now try doing an observational drawing of this object, recording everything that you see! |

Sidewalk Chalk Paint
Stir in the food colouring. Repeat for different colours. Store leftover paint in airtight container. |
Observational Drawing – Crumpled Piece of Paper
Fold or crumple up a piece of paper. This will be your visual reference. Next, draw the folded or crumpled piece of paper, recording everything that you see. Finally, shade it in, re-creating the values or tones that you see. Check out this video to see the process with three different pieces of paper as visual references...

WEEK 4... May 4 - May 8, 2020
Creativity/Imagination
Watercolour
Start by lightly drawing the outlines of simple shapes. Try wetting a shape first using a brush and clean water, then adding the colour. Tune in on Thursday at 1:30 for an introduction to different watercolour techniques. No watercolour at home? You can outline shapes with Crayola markers, then apply clean water with a brush to get a watery effect. OR, try shading shapes using coloured pencils, layering different colours to ‘mix’.
Here are a few online tutorials that might be helpful if you’d like to create greeting cards while experimenting with watercolour: |
Technical Skills
Contour Drawing
Start with a vegetable or a piece of fruit, position it for careful observation and draw the outer edge or outline, showing everything that you see. Then, start eating the vegetable or fruit, pausing a few times (stop and draw!) to create a series of contour drawings. Remember that for contour drawings, you spend MOST of your time observing the subject, trying to record every line, shape, angle, space, etc. that you see.
Here’s a Youtube tutorial to remind you of the contour drawing process: |
